What axle is this? D35? The metal plug has me confused.
Under an '89 XJ.

round cover = D 35

I think 89 was the last year for metal plugs in the D35. Metal plugs went out with non C clip D35s.

Yup, metal plug means it's a non-clip. The plug is also lower in the cover than the c-clips rubber plug as the c-clip uses the gear oil to lube the wheel bearings. Something to consider before anyone gets the notion of swapping the cover onto a c-clip D35.

but remember ................ covers can be swapped...... dosent mean anything defendant
Well you could swap the older cover onto the new axle. But you'll have a problem.

The bottom of the fill hole on the non-clip cover is below the bottom of the tubes. You can see that in the pictures above. This is fine for the non-clip axle since the wheel bearings have a seal between the tube and the bearings are greased. The c-clip axle has the bearings open to the tubes and use the gear oil for lubrication. No gear oil in the tubes means fried wheel bearings.

Thanks.... I was getting ready to research this idea, cause I hate the rubber plug.

couldnt you tap the hole and put in a metal plug? is there enough metal for the threads?

using that chart, the d35 and chrysler 8.25 look the same. the novice would have a real hard time determining the correct axle with that chart.

But in this case, the Dana symbol stamped in the cover was a good give-away.

true, just saying thats not the best chart to use when trying to determine what the axle is when most time the question is whether its a d35 or 8.25.

8.25 is flat on the bottom as well.

i know, but the pic from the chart you showed does not show the flat bottom. only point i was try to make was that the chart would not be very good if someone was trying to tell the difference between the d35 and the 8.25 because it doesnt show the flat bottom. thats all.
