Power Steering Pump Problem

My xj has been making a groaning noise when I turn the wheel. I took the cap off to check the fluid level, it was fine but the fliud looked brown. What does this mean. I havn't added fluis for about a month so the cap hasn't been off for a month also. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks, Matt

What was the problem you had. I've had a groaning noise when I turn the wheel and haven't been able to track it down. There are no leaks in the system, then fluid looks good and there are no rough spots in the action. When you get a chance if you could please let me know I would appriciate it, thanks-Kelvin
