CV Joints vs. U Joints and some brake questions...

I was reading my FSM (printed 1985) and saw that the Selec Trac system used CV joints at the steering knuckle where the Command Trac used U-Joints. What are the advantages / disadvantages of each design? Are the CV joints better for Full time 4wd?

Also, I've researched the rotor size of XJs from late 80s, early 90s, and late 90s. Seems the rotor is virtually the same size. 11-1/32 vs. 11-1/64. Upon searching the forums seems people swap to later brakes as an upgrade. I did see that the caliper (pad also?) may be larger, but how much of an upgrade is this? I've also seen other upgrades, but i'm only interested in bolt on.

My plans are stock wheel / tire size 235s, stock height, 98% street driven.
