From ODF (TSF)

Can Opener

The Can Opener section of Archers FB 4WD trail recently had the boulders removed and a lift of pit run applied. The reason for this temporary modification was that ODF received several reports from 4WD users who said the previous boulder placement was practically impassable. An opportunity arose while the ODF Road Crew was in the area doing FEMA work and had walked the large excavator up C Line Road. While this machine was available we opted to remove the boulders. Road Crew removed the boulders and placed pit run to protect the trail as a temporary measure. ODF intends to work with users to reinstall the boulders when road access is restored to this area. At present the only way to get a full size excavator up to this location is to walk it in. This is very time consuming and not cost effective. Repair work on C Line Road needs to be completed before an excavator on a trailer can make this grade. Other routes including Archers Rd. Ben Smith Rd, and Portland Mills Rd. are too steep for an excavator on a trailer. When repairs to C Line Road are completed ODF will work with 4WD users to re-install the boulders and build challenge back into this section of trail. For information on the status of C Line Road contact the Forest Grove District at 503-357-2191.

That seems like a BS answer. It was rated a double black diamond for a reason. It should be nearly impassable, what do people expect?

Picture of it in July.

Looks doable. Well..maybe when its dry.

It looks like there were lots of people going totally around those rocks (up the bank on the left side. If this was the case it wouldn't take long for that trail to be totally destroyed.

At least we have the understanding of what they did, why they did it, and that they intend to utilize the community to put it back together when they get a chance that is appropriate.

It sounds to me like they made the right decision given the situation.

PS. A dry trail can be a cake walk in 2wd, in the rain it might be very difficult in 4wd, and in the snow totally inpassable. Is this why most of the community only wheels in the summer?

dunno about that. I'm not sure if you remember but before the last "modification" thats how the trail was and it was like that for quite some time. It had gotten wider but the rocks were pritty resiliant.

Also whats so big about having a trail that is impasible or very difficult in the winter? If all the trails were resonable during the winter they would be cake in the summer.

Oh, as an aside, it was pritty easy during the summer.
