High Idle

I have a stock 88 XJ, auto, 242. I know when first started Idle goes high (1500-2000) for a few seconds. my problem is occasionally Idle when started goes to 3000 and won't drop. restarting sometimes cures. Temp does not have an effect, happens hot or cold. Today while idleing, idle speed varied considerably after 5 min was up around 2500.

Any ideas, cures?

its you tps. it may be bad or in need of ajustment.

Replaced, & adjusted TPS. same problem. Replaced IAC motor, problem solved. Thanks for the help

Yes the IAC did it for me as well. Adjusting TPS helped too.

I have a 90 with the same high idle problem. What is the IAC motor?

Regulates idle speed. It's on the throttle body next to the throttle position sensor, opposite end from the throttle cable.

That thing was filthy. Soaked it in a little WD and it seemed to do the trick. Thanks for the info.
