First off... hi guys! I used to be active on here like 5 years ago and kinda fell off. My jeep is gettin up there and things are starting to act up.

1. My idle has been very rough... usually reving up and down and the jeep even bucks sometimes even with my foot on the brake. Any idea whats causing this? I had a tune up not long ago.. hopefully it's nothing major.

2. My engine is either miraculously low somehow (like 150 degrees) or the gauge is just gone haywire. I doubt it's possible I'm running at 155-165 in the summer. What to do?

3. Need new headlights. I pretty much will just get some basic Hellas or something, but thought I'd see if anyone had some special headlishts in mind they's like to suggest.

Thanks guys... it's good to be back.

1. Vacuum leak maybe?

2. I don't know, probably the gauge.

3. There are TONS of threads about this, search for headlight upgrade, here I have some bookmarked. I just bought some and will be installing them as soon as I make a wiring harness.

1. Idle Air Control Valve....?

2. temp sensor on the engine...they can go bad....

3. I just run silverstars....

sooo I need to make a wiring harness just to replace the headlights? I was under the impression that it was just a plug and go kind of deal.

The documentation I have says that if you keep the new lights under 100w then the OE wiring should be fine. It also says to check the voltage coming off the alternator and compare that to the voltage at the headlight plugs, if there's more than 1 volt difference then you should replace them.

You'll probably be ok with the OE wiring, but I'm replacing mine along with my battery mains just to be safe. Also the headlight wiring in later model XJs 97-up have smaller headlight wiring (I think)...

Re: Headlight Upgrade

Ive got the Sylvania Silverstar headlights in my Cherokee, and absolutly love them. They are superbright and the beam on the light spreads to the sides of the road alot more than the stock ones.

where'd you guys pick up the silverstars? Theres and autozone and pepboys near me... thanks.

ok cool thanks. I was gonna order some nice hellas... but if the sylvanias sound good, and I can simply pick them up I guess I'll go with them.

Now just to fix the engine problems.

BTW if you have the inline six 155 is too cold for that engine. Stock T-stat is 195. Some aftermarket chips require 180* but I wouldn't go lower than that.

so are you saying that if it's running at 155 I could be doing damage? It used to run at about 205-210 "like it's painted on". I'm pretty sure it's just a glitch in the temp gauge. As I have not done any mods that would affect the engine temp that significantly.

its most likely the temp sending unit, theres one at the back of the head and one on the t-stat housing (I forget which one the guage runs off of, but a search will probably reveal it ;))

less likely, but it also could be the t-stat stuck open, it won't damage your engine running cold like that, but it will never get out of warmup mode so it'll run rich and you'll get shitty millage

#1 Check your compression, replace your distributor cap and rotor, plugs, and wires.

#2 Replace your thermostat. Yours is probably stuck open.

#3 I cant help you there
