According to kid4life's sticky (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?p=960773#post960773) u should use cross multiplication to figure what gears u should use with which size tires.

So i want to go to 35's and i have 3.55 gearing now.

so... 27/35=3.55/x
......124.25=27x
.........4.60=x

now if im not mistaken 4.56 is alot closer to 4.60 then 4.88 is :D, so i dont understand why most everybody says to regear to 4.88's with 35's.

I'm trying to get the best possible gas mileage out of my new gears, so wouldn't regearing to as close to stock as possible be the way to go?

Because doing the math that way does not account for the higher rolling resistance and weight of the larger tire. While 4.56 would put the gear ratio closer to stock, you want that little bit extra gearing to compensate for the larger tire mass.

what he said.

I don't follow the math though...um...what gears should I have with 33's then? I figured 4.10's would be an OK setup for highway speeds and around town speeds...

nvm
got it

x2 only with a slight change.

I am going 4.88 and a ford escort wagon.....

I am too sexy for my car... I am too sexy for my shirt.... :guitar:

This makes lots more room in the budget for jeep parts. Plus you can tear the jeep down for whole weekends at a time... And still go back to the parts store because they gave you the wrong stuff.

....or you could buy 2 jeeps!

and go the american way and say SCREW GAS MILEAGE! :p

4.88 would be best for power and mileage. You will have to replace the carrier in the D30 to fit the carrier for the 4.88's and you might not be able to use 4.88 if your rear is an 8.25. I might be wrong but definitely check before you order gears.

Why would you ever want to daily drive a Jeep?

oh, that's because I'm awesome.

I DD my 86 comanche but it's powered by a 96 camaro 3800. average gas mileage is 18-22mpg city, I get about 25 highway. it's lifted 3" with 31" dayton timberline a/t's and geared with 3.55's. and yes, I granny drive it for the mileage. it's getting regeared to 3.73 and that'll give a couple extra mpg.

Dad DD's his 86 comanche that has a factory Renault 2.1 Turbo Diesel in it and he's getting between 23 and 29 around town. it varies due to a crack in the precup chamber...if the boost gets too high, air bubbles into the cooling system and causes issues plus burning coolant.

so yes, I'd DD a jeep. I'd rather feel safe than worry about my safety while driving 45+ minutes to school/work at highway speeds in a little poor safety-rated car.

and no, I wouldn't DD a 4.0 unless I did some gearing mods to it....which is why I'm regearing my 89 manche.

gearing helps mileage, or hurts it.
