91 cherokee with auto and ABS. When im stopping on bumps and hills brakes will fail for second while abs is kicking in. Also when braking quick and hard i will have no brakes for a moment. With that being said i did some research but just didnt find the specific answer on which ABS fuse to pull that wont do harm. I figure eliminating it will solve my problem till i just remove the whole thing.
search feature doesnt like the term ABS.

I am new here, but when I did some searching, I found that it doesn't like 3 characters. Try ABS*. It seems to work better.
Good luck
Scott

The Bendix ABS system (as used on early XJs) is under lifetime warranty due to its habit of failing and leaving the vehicle without any brakes at all. I'd recommend getting in touch with either DCX or a dealer about this, but don't pull the fuse. If you disable the system, you'll be left without brakes.

a couple quick questions then, one im not original owner will that matter?
two will the fact that im lifted on 31's matter.
and three what is dcx?
thanks

The Bendix ABS pump yes it used to be under a life time warranty. But this is no longer true. I had my replaced due to it failing and having no brakes. The New warranty according to the jeep dealer I went to is a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. I tried to help a local friend out and the dealer would not replaced it under warranty since he's jeep was a 91 with 152,000 miles on it.

so with that being said i was told by a couple jeep guys a while back that one of the two fuses cannot be pulled you will lose all pressure in your breaks and another can be pulled and will only disable abs thats it. i guess i need to know if this is really true or not.

I would think that is true. When my ABS pump went bad. (The thing you hear when you first turn the key to the run position.) Like pulling the fuse to the pump. I had very little to no brakes. At first it would come and go. But after a couple of months it stopped working completely

I pulled both abs fuses and the relay out of my 95 when i did an axle swap. i have had no ill effects and have full non abs functioning brakes. I also pulled the abs light from the dash when it finaly bugged me after a while.

Being a 91 your ABS should not be a bendix 9. But if it was you pull the ABS BATT fuse and leave the other one in. The pump motor and actuator are covered under the recall. NOT THE ACCUMULATOR.

Being a non bendix 9 im not too sure, but all fuses should be able to be pulled and still have brakes.

I have a '92 XJ I-6 Auto tranny which had ABS. I don't know if my ABS is the same as on your '91. Mine decided to hold a slight hydraulic pressure in the brake system randomly from time to time. It burnt up my front pads and rotors. The only way to get the pressure off was to wait hours or unscrew the brake lines slightly.

There were two electrical wire harnesses to the ABS unit. I just unplugged both. It's been 60K miles since and I'm still here so it seems the brakes work. I don't notice any wierdness. Swapped the rear D35 somewhat later for a D44 but the 44 of course doesn't have the wheel speed sensors so there's no going back now. One of these days I'll get around to removing the ABS unit and re-plumbing the brake lines.

89 - 91 is Bendix 9. Pull all the fuses, and shortly after you will lose your brakes.

okay i have been doing some research on the brake booster master cylinder swap but multiple years are mentioned. which years are the most simple swaps that i should try to find parts from and who has the best write-up on this swap, better yet can someone do it for me? haha just kidding

95/96 has a better brake booster and is an easy swap. Prior to that, it should be just as easy a swap. I took the brake pedal and lever so everything bolted right in EXCEPT the brake line fittings are NOT the same - you can: cut and reflare; use adaptor fittings; or swap lines from the donor vehicle.

Search "Bendix ABS" on the forums and you'll get all the info you need.

Swapping to the single will be your "simplest" swap. Going to the 95/96 dual will be a lot more modding than just swapping lines. Go with the single, get ends from rear brake line, pass brake line, and the whole drivers line. Swap in the drivers line, re flair the rear and pass side. Really easy, did mine in about a half day and removed all parts of the ABS, de- wired it all throughout the looms and had it on the road. Totally simple.

Oh and never have ever seen a 91 with bendix 9, hard to say since 90-91 was a conversion year.......... damn jeeps
