What makes the cat rattle?

I'm about sick of hearing this damn thing on my truck, but don't really feel like shelling out the money for a new one for how much I drive it.

Is there a way to fix it?

On mine, the inside 'stuff' was loose. cut it off, beat it all out and reinstalled.
 
Yup, broken honeycomb inside. Mine was also broke and rattling. Pulled off the exhaust and cleaned her out.

That sounds more like it from all the vibrating sounds it makes, but who knows maybe I'll get motivated one day and try both.
