ok well i got an 87 xj few weeks back. The previous owner said it needed a new oil pump, and had been sitting for about a year. Well I replaced the oil pump and oil sending unit.
I cranked it up. I can hear a tick...sounds like its coming from the top end. The oil pressure reads 80..so im assuming the pump is working, but why is it reading high?
I am no mechanic so, I really need help here.

Might be a stuck lifter. You should replace the oil pressure sender because they frequently go bad and are only about $20.

You could try some oil addative before pulling the head to replace the lifters. You can verify the lifters are bad if you pull the valve cover and there is ecessive play in the rocker arms.

Your tick could also be caused by a crack in your ehaust manifold.
