I have those exact two year models and I did the swap last summer:

i just put a hitch on my 01 that i pulled from an older jeep at the junkyard. it was a whole lot more work than i thought it would be. getting some of the bolts off on the passenger side was my biggest problem. it will also help to buy the nutstrip for the driver side. it will make it a whole lot easier. passenger side should already have them.

yes....I got my 88 from a friend and he took the hitch off it and put it on the 2000 model he bought..no problems
