i heard somewhere that you can boost the compression of your 4.0 by using a thinner head gasket. im a little skeptical, but is it true, any help would be great.
Yes, you can. It wouldn't be worth the hassle for the very little, if any, horsepower it will give you. Best bet is to get some custom higher compression pistions, or add a turbo/supercharger.
SBC gaskets can get as thin a .031", which is about the thickness of a standard size paperclip. And that is with the copper ones.
Only real advantage of thinnner/thicker head gasket is so you will be able to fine tune the compression ratio.
On a 4.0, no need to do it, unless you plan on drag racing it, and need a specific compression ratio for nitrous oxide, supercharger, or a turbo setup.
It's not a myth. if you use a thinner head gasket you lower the cylinder head and reduce the volume of the cumbustion chamber increasing compression. It's just dosn't increse it very much.
