I was told this was a 1996 Chrysler 8.25, but it looks very similar to the Dana 35 I wanted to replace. Can anyone confirm this is indeed an 8.25?

D35. The ChryCo axle has a flat surface along the bottom - and both the upper and lower surfaces of that housing are curved.

I am no expert but with a Dana stamp on the diff cover I would question your info source.

That is what I thought! I got it from a junkyard, and didnt have my rig to compare it to at the time. Thank you for confirming.

The only possible way that's an 8.25 is if the bottom lip has been ground off. Also, the 43225 number on the cover indicates it could be an '87-'89 YJ diff. casting with anything from 3.55 to 4.56 gears or the most likely answer of a '94-'96 XJ casting with a ratio between 3.55-4.11.

The initial picture is sharp enough that if you look closely, you'll see not only the obvious Dana logo on the cover and on the rubber plug, but you can even read "35C" on the left top webbing.
