What the deuce is this?

I feel silly asking but I don't know what this hose is/does.
I can't post pics, but it starts in the left front wheel well and goes up into the engine bay close to the firewall. It doesn't connect to anything up top, just has a small white cap that spins loosely.

Differential breather hose? I believe that is what you are describing. Trust me you want this thing.

There is a nipple on top of the front differential.
