Just an update

Don't know if any of you guys know, but on the way home from the Tahuya noob run, I lost my brakes on I-5 near Fife. I had to have my rig towed to the Bellevue Les Schwab (where I work). I lost 90% of my brake pedal and just barely avoided a collision by swerving onto the shoulder.

At first we were stumped. I'm not a brake guy myself, I just bust tires. We determined that the rears needed to be replaced. I did that and I still had only 15-25% of my pedal. This was not the problem, although it had to be done anyway.

Then my buddy noticed how visually off my camber was on my left front tire. Jack it up and the bearings were BUSTED! Never before have I encountered such a toasted hub. We were a little worried that the spindle was compromised as well. With the tire hanging out at a 10 or 15 degree angle, the caliper was left way open and prevented me from getting pressure in my brake lines (I guess).

Then with the combination of: me not knowing how to do the hub on my own, my experienced buddies being busy, quarter coming to an end at UW and being scheduled for the early shift for two straight weeks.... I had to leave my damn Jeep at work for over a week and a half. Half the time it was parked outside the shop (with my temporary window :D ).

In conclusion: I finally got the hub replaced today and drove it home  . But... as a result of the vehicle being driven with the caliper wide open, the caliper bracket scored up the rotor and now I have to do front brakes as well :( . I have learned four things: 1.) Boggers will F*CK up your hubs 2.) I need to learn how to do more work on my Jeep 3.) It's nice to have a backup vehicle (I made my commute on my lil' Yamahad scooter :D ) 4.) it's nice to have an employee discount!

Jeff,
Glad to hear you figured out what the issues were and got them fixed, or at least most of them fixed;)

Unfortunately those boggers will do that. And they could continue to do the same to your new parts as well as steering and other components.

At least we can see you back on the trail soon!!

X2 on the Boggers. A very heavy tire for it's size that bites hard and stresses out every related steering, bearing, axle, and R&P component much more than any other same-sized tire. They look cool, and they are awesome in a straight line mud pit, but other than that they're just not worth running IMO.

And I ran two sets of them on my CJ (33"s and 35"s) so it's not just speculation on my part. I'll never run them again.

Man thats good to know! Ive always wanted a set of those but now im having second thoughts. I even had a pair i got brand new for $400 but ended up not getting my lift on so i sold em for $800. I guess i scored twice on that deal!

I run 33's on my CJ and have never had any of those issues

guess maybe I got lucky

My CJ was okay on the 33" Boggers, once I stepped up to the 35"s I started fragging parts left and right on the same trails and with the same driving style. It's just a very heavy tire that hooks up violently. For example, with BFG Mudders, TSLs, I've been able to use wheelspin and momentum to overcome some obstacles, particularly steep climbs. With Boggers, the Jeep jumps all around as the tires try to hook up, you lose your line on the obstacle, and eventually something breaks.

Not everyone's experience will be the same, but that's mine with these tires.

I know it's not the best choice... but I can remember when I was little, years before I was ever driving, I remember looking in 4x4 magazines and thinking "those are the most bad-ass tires ever!". I've ALWAYS wanted a set. The price was right and I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

So far I'll I've broken is a hub, although it had some disasterous side effects. I probably won't run them again. I'm glad that I did though, just so that I can say I did. And aside from the breakage, I'm loving the performance. It almost feels like I have lockers :D . I bought an LTB for my spare and plan to run those next.

Jeff,
Don't let what we have all said get to you. Just understand that those tires will put more stress on alot of components than an other might. So keep an eye on the steering components, hubs, etc. Maybe even keep a few spares with you so that if/when something breaks you have the parts with you;)
