jack up the front end. hold the top and bottom of the wheel and rock it back and forth checking for play between the ball joint and the knuckle. if you notice a fair amount of play it is probably time to relplace them

jack it up and grab the tire at 6 and 12 and wiggle the hell out of it and look for play.
