starter problem

Ok replaced my starter with a new one and when I turn the key the starter spins but does not engage to the flywheel. What would cause this.

The bendix is not throwing the gear into mesh with the flywheel. The starter relay might be bad or maybe a defective new starter. Is this the same problem you had before replacing your starter?

no its not the same problem. So I guess I will take it out and return it.

I had this happen once. There's enough play in the bolt holes to position the starter too close so the gears can't engage. Once I loosened the bolts and shifted the starter, it worked fine.

When I took the starter back off, I tested it with some jumper cables. I could see the bendix snapping out so I knew it was good. I was quite surprised that such a little difference made such a big difference (if that's makes any sense).
