swap new AC compressor into older system?

I have a 96, and my AC compressor needs to be replaced. I picked up a compressor from a 99 in a boneyard without realizing (I'm dumb that way sometimes) that they changed the system in between. The old style has the hoses going into the back of the compressor, the new unit has the hoses going into an adapter-thingy on the top.

Can the hoses be configured to work with a newer compressor somehow, or do I need to just get an older one?
