Serched for 2 days cant find the help i need. Voltage is going from 9. to as high as 18. up down/up down 3.0+ changes, with or without any accys on. (95 sport 4.0 aw4). Does that mean it could only be the regulator (in pcm) or can there be something else. Started shortly after I washed the motor compartment, didnt go crazy with h2o either, was cautious w/the vital elec componets. Checked all grounds, cables are new, bat is good (yellow top). Im an electrical retard so I thought the XJ wizards on here might be of some help. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!

BUMP! Need some help Gentlemen!! :rattle:

Alternators don't like water. My son and I cleaned the motor on his Blazer using water and ended up having to replace the alternator.

Are these readings comming off of your dash guage?? If so that guage dosent work too well. Try getting your readings from a voltmeter.
Bought a new volt meter today. and the gauge is giving the same readings, lights, markers, inst. gauges, ect... all flickering.

You may have gotten water on the battery temp sensor. It,s located under the battery in the tray, there should be a code to tell what the problem is.Do the key on/off trick to find the code.

????????? Theres no battery temp sensor in my rig. onoffnooffon done no codes. thanks for your help.?

Voltage is at 13.8. But I think it's that high because of the alternator putting out too much.

You didn't get any codes? No 52 (I think) or 12.
Disconnect the battery for awhile, reconnect it. Look up the relearn recommendations.
There is/was a TSB about pulsing the alternator circuit and doing an accidental reprogram on your PCM. Hope that's not it.
The alternator regulates in a feedback loop. To low of a voltage and it raises voltage and vice versa. If wherever it gets it's feedback from has a poor or flacky connection, it can affect the voltage output (high voltage).
Pull the PCM connector, check for pins partially pushed out the back. Clean the connector, make sure it's dry, spray it with air or something. Avoid spraying anything in there but contact cleaner.

I got 12 and 55, 12 is battery disco, and 55 is end of codes, that doesnt help. I pulled the connector today just because i have the JET MODULE, stage 2, all looks good RELEARN??, TSB??? Sorry dont follow. Can you explain more. Thanks

I read a lot, there was a Technical Service Bulletin from Jeep, that warned against connecting and disconnection the PCM plug under power (with the key in run or the battery connected). It can mess with the programming. Something about causing pulses to the power circuit or something. Just something I read in passing, wasn't really paying attention, as I was looking for something else. Was just thinking, moisture in the connector could possibly do the same thing, cause a pulse or surge.
After disconnecting the battery, there is a procedure to follow. Reconnecting it and letting the motor just idle is supposed to be bad for it. I really don't remember the recommendations. I usually take it for a drive with little to moderate stop and go and then a moderate run up a high speed road at 35-60-40 until it is at operating temp. Works for me, I'm guessing the relearn procedure was recommended to avoid running it at idle or a constan RPM, to give the PDC a variety of driving inputs to recalibrate or something. Just a WAG (wild arses guess).
The alternator in the wifes 96 was acting up, overcharging and it seemed different voltages, most anytime I looked. I was wondering if it was the gage, the alternator or the regulator. I disconnected the battery for awhile, checked my Alternator connector and PDC connections, inspected the wiring and reconnected the battery. The problem disappeared. I really don't know if I fixed it or it fixed itself. But a couple of months later the battery failed, that may have been part of it.
I really haven't had that much trouble out of our 96, I've had a lot more experience with the old Renix's.

I've heard another trick is, while the battery is disconencted, turn the key to START to drain off any electricity that may be in the system. I'm not sure what stores electricity really, but, it's worth the few seconds to ensure you got correctly cleaned the PCM's memory.

Thanks MUD MAN, Ill try the drive around thing in the am, that makes sence. I did find moisture on the pcm connector today and dried it but still the ups n downs on the voltage. I think ill try some more s..t in the am. If no better off to the STEALERSHIP to at least tell me whats goin on. Thanks again for your help MUD. Ill post tomorrow the results.

I just read that on a search i did im gonna try that now n restart in the am. Thanks BLAINE

I have --always washed all of my engines every third time or so ,cant stand a dirty motor ,,,,but then again all this newer b.s. i guess is different , a battery temp sensor ? geez ?
Just take it to the electric joint ,shouldnt be more than 35 bucks ? 13.5 volts is right on,any less and you got dim stuff.
They should start putting pantys on crap if they cant do a little water these days!
I long for the old days myself.
Not any help i know ,but its not a spaceship after all.

take it to someone who is--suppose to know -- and get to know them,in the end it will pay for itself . :eeks1:
