Axle swap problems, Reverse of what most would do.

Well my 92 Cherokee met its demise last week. It suffered a catastrophic F-250 attack, at the hand of a moron. So this week I purchased a 2001 Cherokee sport. It has a manual transmission like its predecessor although; it does not look like the AX15 that was in my old one. If anyone has one of this year with a 5 speed knowing what tranny it has would be some good info to know. The new one is completely stock. So I was going to transfer the lift (4.5in) and was thinking about trading out the axles. I know that Dana 35 in the 92 is not as good of an option as the corporate 8.25 in the new one. But it had the gears changed out and an ARB air locker installed. So run it until it breaks is what I was thinking. Besides I never plan on anything bigger than 31’s. I have removed the axle before but always reinstalled it. I noticed on the new jeep that it has some kind of box with the rear break lines running into it. Will I run into any problems with the breaks? I don't think it has anti-locks.

Your new tranny is a NV3500, similar medium duty tranny to the AX15 you had, but you will notice it is louder (notoriously so, but don't worry, it isn't broken). It sounds like the 01 you got has antilock brakes - if so it has the same D35 you are used to, not teh 8.25 as the 8.25 was never available on the XJ with antilocks. I have never done a switch with an antilock vehicle, but do remember reading it is possible, just a trick or two - I am sure someone with firsthand knowledge will dive in here...

thanks for the info, it looks a lot beefyer than the 35 in the 92, but maybe I have forgoten. Or having a lift and larger tires might have made it look smaller.

I verified it is an 8.25, and does not have abs. Yes I was talking about the box with the ebreak cables. Will the same breaks mount to the 35 or will I have to swap breaks and everything?

your ebrake cables on your 00 will work fine with the old D35.

Leave the axles and brakes intact and swap them together. Disconnect the breather hose, the hydraulic brake lines at the splitter block and the parking brake cables inside the drums. Driveshafts might be different as well since the 8.25 has a longer pinion, and I'm not sure if the AX15 and NV3500 are the same length.

Ok, sounds easy enough. Thanks for the info, as far as the drive shafts I have one out of 2wd that I could always have cutdown. Drivetrain specialist has done one for me before and it was $60 with balancing. Besides I am looking at puting a custom shaft in with a double cardon joint. I had some small vibration out of the 92. I talked to tom woods a few months ago about the same thing. I was also looking at the ones from Rubicon Express. That brings up another question. Has anyone had experiance with the sye that is the flange where you cut the output shaft on the t-case?
