Another Night run in the desert?

August 26th?

Mars

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!

This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that
will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in
recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is
in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be
certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth
in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when
Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and
will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power magnification

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Mars will be easy to spot. At the
beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are
closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its
highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has
seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at
the beginning of August to see Mars grow
progressively brighter and brighter throughout the
month.

If Men are From Mars, and Women are From Venus, do you suppose anything of great significance will happen as Mars passes closer to Earth? Will men change? NAH.........................enjoy the sky.

So who is planning the night run and where?

I'm in! It'll be a bit of a drive, especially that stretch once we pass the moon. I always have to be careful not to doze off.

Neat trick, I really want to go now!

I was planning the Calico Loop at least once... maybe twice if time permits...

CALICO NEW MOON RUN

Tim (Bent) and I will be meeting at Calico on Saturday, August 26 @ 8:00pm, on the highway in front of the main entrance. We will be running the Calico loop at least once. There is a bypass at the entrance of Doran should we decide to start the loop there.

Participate at your OWN RISK, scorpions and venomous snakes are nocturnal this time of the year in this region. There will probably be an assortment of other creepy-crawly things skittering about, as well.

Expected low temp. ~62°

We will begin the run on CB channel 4.

Well, I hate to do this, but I can't go on the Night run. The wife is prego and due the next week and asked that I not go as I would be out of cell range and I agreed... Sorry... we can plan another after the Baby is born......

Ken

Sounds pretty cool, I'm going to plan on that. I'm new to the SoCal area, so how far away is Calico from San Diego?

Hope to be there.

Not terribly far. Maybe three to four hours depending on traffic and the time of day.

The Doran/Odessa loop is a fun run, but you'd be trading some nice scenery for a chance to run a nice desert trail in the summer time.
