Running 35's on DD... Bad Idea???

I have a '98 XJ Sport w/ 4.0L HO, AW4 tranny, NP 231, HP D30, 29 spline Chryco 8.25, and about 6" of net lift (my 31's look so small) I plan to upgrade 4.56 gears, Rear Arb locker and alloy shafts front and back. are 4.56 gears good enough for 35's on a DD? How would my mileage be? Is it even a good idea to go 35's with this setup or should I go 33's? I really would rather go 35's if I can do it without running into problems. I do plan to wheel it alot this summer.

When I went to 35's on my DD, I had an 8.25/30 with 4.56 gears, and found that while it was ok around town on and the trail, on the highway it was HORRIBLE. I picked up a 44 and went 4.88's, wish I could have gone 5.13's.

That said, I'm running a non HO (1987), but only have about 60k on the original engine.

35's are expensive. Get 33's. ;) I'm tired of watching my tires wear down and am shopping for a honda.

I'm considering the same thing, a jump in axle strength, and then 35s on the DD. I'm just gonna get mud flaps, and 5.13s, (like cal mentioned). Who knows how soon though.

Just gets more expensive to replace tires. Mine's technically a DD right now, but I don't have to drive it to school everyday(take the bus), which is nice.

My DD is as follows (just listing the major stufF)
1999 XJ, 4.0lho, np231 w/ slip yoke eliminator, aw4 tranny.
5.5", 35x12.5x15" BFG ATs, D30 front, d44 rear. 4.56s, detroit in rear, Currie Steering. etc

Does fine as a daily :)

Im running 1999 XJ, 4.0lho, np231 w/ slip yoke eliminator, 3.5" SF, 35" MTR's, D30 front, c8.25 rear. 3.55s, and a powertrax no-slip. It is ok on 35's with the 3.55 gears, but Im gonna regear it to 4.56 this summer. I dont mind it as a DD though!

Thats because you don't know better. Drive on 4.56's for a season and go back :)

no its because I dont have the money for a gear swap yet and only have one vehicle, so how am I supposed to mind?????

I think you missed my point there. Once you have done the regear and see the real difference it makes, if you had to go back, you would mind.

Regearing does cost a bit up front, but on a setup like that will pay for itself in less than a year. On 35's I'm getting about 18 mpg highway right now with 4.88's, I got about 16 with 4.56's. When I had 4.56 and 32's I was getting 19-20. I'm pretty sure if I went to 5.13's now I could pull 20 mpg on 35's.

I get your point. I had 4.56 and 35's on my last XJ and it was much better. Work is only a mile away and my gf drives everywhere else. I try to drive it as little as possible until I swap out the gears. I plan on having it done in June/July. Only gonna cost $800 with parts and labor. Now I just gotta save up $800:)
