What dana 60 front end will fit into an xj? I have a 14bolt rear, so I want 8 lugs, I want kingpins, and I heard of the 78-79 fords hi pinion, but is that the only one? Thanks for all the help- Ron

Any dana 60 you wanna make fit. You should go ford if your keeping your transfer case, and want a high pinion, but you can do chevy/dodge if you dont mind low pinion and convert to a dana 300 with PSD.

The 78/9 F350 d60 is the most popular, but its balljoints and not kingpins. Some people use the 80's and 90's f350 stuff, but the diff is in various locations and can be hard to get the coils to fit.

Other way around - those are the most desireable kingpin models. After that the diff was offset even more towards the driver's side.

You might be right. I'm looking at a box that says "78-97 F350 4x4 balljoint kit", but when I type the part number into google just now, it says 80-97 everywhere its listed.

Ford

1978-79 F-350 and some F-250 (Snofighter and High GVW packages)
1986-88 F-350 with dual rear wheels (DRW)

1988-91.5 F-350 with single rear wheels (SRW)

1992-95 F-350 (all) (balljoint)

1996.5-98 F-350 (all) (balljoint)

2000 F350/F450/F550 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x170mm wheel bolt pattern F350 / 8x220mm F450/F550, unit bearing hub)

2000.5 F350/F450/F550 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x170mm wheel bolt pattern F350 / 8x220mm F450/F550, unit bearing hub)

2001 F350 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x170mm wheel bolt pattern, unit bearing hub)

2001-02 F450/F550 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x220mm wheel bolt pattern, unit bearing hub)

2002 F250/F350 SRW (balljoint, metric 8x170mm wheel bolt pattern, unit bearing hub)

2002 F450/F550 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x220mm wheel bolt pattern, unit bearing hub)

All these Ford versions were drivers side differential, reverse-cut (high pinion) gears, and kingpin knuckles to 1991.5 and balljoints thereafter. Most Ford D60s are internal style hubs, but external type lockout versions do exist. 2000 and later Ford D60s have balljoints, a metric wheel lug pattern of 8x170mm up to F350 and 8x220mm for F450/F550, different brakes and spindles, sealed "unit-bearing hubs", hub-centric wheels, different length axleshafts from the earlier D60s, and larger Superduty specific tie rod ends. From 2000 on, the Ford D60 front axle is also known as the Model 60F2000+ or the 248M. 248 just happens to be the equivalent in millimeters of 9.75" - the diameter of the D60s ring gear.

since your in cali, your looking prolly about 1100-1500 for a complete one that you would want to use. but not really complete since you would want to regear it and lock it. Not to mention convert the front to 35 spline with new slugs or hubs and outer shafts. So say you get lucky and find one for say 1100, your only getting usable housing, and outer parts with stock inner shafts.

Call performanceoffroadcenter and ask about the new solid axle housing with the 44 center and 60 outer parts. I was told 2 days ago that for 1300$ they (solid axle) are going to start selling a 44/60 hybred that is has thier high clearance 44 center and thier super strong bling inner C's and outer knuckles, along with a cover, and hubs and spindles. Not to mention its what ever WMS you want and not what ever you find. Only things your not getting that you would with the stocker thats usable for 1100 is inner axles and brake caliper mounts (100$), and maybe calipers and disc (150$ for both). If its true what they are saying (PORC) then the new bare housing is the way for most to start on a budget. just saying is all. Other wise if you want a custom WMS locked D60 HP your in to about 3K and up when all said and done. IMO of course.. and my experience over the last month or two.
