88 CHEROKEE NEEDS HELP

I HAVE AN 88 CHEROKEE THAT WAS RUNNING PERFECT AND ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WOULD NOT START. SO I CHECKED THE COIL AND IT WAS OK SO I HAD THE IGNITION MODULE CHECK AND IT WAS OK SO I REPLACED THE DISTRIBUTOR AND IT STILL WOULD NOT START. SO I DID A GOOGLE SEARCH AND IT CAME UP WITH SEVERAL FORUMS THAT ALL TALKED ABOUT THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SO I CHECKED THE PLUG AND IT WAS MELTED TO DEATH SO I BROKE IT APART AND PLUGGED THE WIRES IN DIRECT AND IT STARTED BUT WHEN I SHUT IT OFF I HAD TO DIS CONNECT AND RECONNECT THE WIRES BEFORE IT WOULD START UNTIL IT WOULD NO LONGER START AGAIN. I REPLACED THE CPS AND NOW IT STARTS NO PROBLEM BUT IT RUNS LIKE CRAP AT CRUISING SPEED, IT IDLES OK AND RUNS GOOD WENT ACCELERATE BUT WHEN YOU CRUISE IT STUTTERS AND MISSES. I REPLACED PLUGS CAP ROTOR AND INTAKE GASKET,CHECKED THE TPS,MAT AND FUEL FILTER AND NO CHANGE EXCEPT NOW I GET A BACKFIRE SOMETIMES. IT RAN VERY GOOD UNTIL THE CPS WENT OUT. CAN ANYONE HELP A JEEPSTER IN NEED.

Sounds like your timing is messed up from your distributer install.
 
X2 on the CAPS and the distributor being one tooth off, Looks like the most likely place to start. Did you finally put a new connector on the CPS? for the long run you need to do that. And by the way dont put your questions in CAPS, most people take it like your screaming at them. Good Luck
