How can I tell what I have?

I'm new here and need some info...
How can I tell what type of axles and t-case I have on my xj?

have a stock 98 xj 4.0 with pt 4wd

want to build it up and want to go from the bottom up, so to speak.

any help would be great

You will have a high pinion Dana 30 front.

The rear will either be a Dana 35, or a Chrysler 8.25.

The 8.25 will have a flat bottom, and have 3" axle tubes, as where the Dana 35 will have a rounded bottom, and have smaller axle tubes.

You have a 231 TC. To be 100% sure, there is a round tag on the back of the TC, and at the top, it will say what one it is.

Just to add, the Flat Bottom of the Chrysler 8.25 axle, is really a straight lip that runs along the bottom of the diff section, the axle is round including the bottom, but there is straight lip running along the bottom that extends out more at the side where the rest of it is rounding up.
