8.25 rear, grind off lip?

So I'm thinking of installing a Detroit and using the 29 spline 8.25 in my 98 to wheel a bit. I've never been inside, so I'm not sure about oil passages or anything, but can I cut off/grind off the lip on the bottom of the center chunk? I'd like it as smooth as a baby's bottom....

I doubt you're gonna need to worry about getting hung up on it much around here.

Yup, I made that post. You can safely grind away up to the bottom of the diff cover bolts.
