curious 3link vs 4link

hey guys i was just curious why rockkrawler would make a front 3 link when most companies make 4 link front ends. i picked up rustys longarm upgrade, but after i seen the price for the rockkrawler upgrade made me sick. a lot cheaper. before i bought it a mechanic told me the front end will be more loose any truth.
 
2, 3, and 4 link designs all have advantages and dis-advantages.

A radius arm, or 2 link design, is nice for packaging purposes, but is inherently a bit more bindy, as it relies on deflection of rubber bushings to achieve articulation, and it exhibits some unloading under climbing conditions due to it's large anti-dive numbers.

A 3 link is a bit harder to package, and maintain good geometry, but allows for very good articulation. The downside is that in order for this suspension to feel solid, and not deflect under braking and impact loads, you must use all solid joints. No rubber should be used.

A 4 link is even more difficult to package with appropriate geometry, and it also relies, to some extent, on deflection of rubber bushings as the axle articulates. This is the OEM XJ design. The plus side is you have a bit more margin for error if a link breaks. If you use a converging upper control arm design, you can use all solid joints and eliminate the Panhard bar, but then you should (really, must) use full hydraulic steering to avoid bumpsteer.

Search around here for picture and threads on the RK 3-link. Their old stuff was bad, but their new stuff has gotten great reviews. The price is really nice, too. They seem to flex very, very well - pretty much the same as the TNT kit. Once I buy new arms I'll be purchasing these.

The radius style is actually a 2-link.
 
A true radius arm suspension (like the Ford design) has only 2 links, but "radius" arm suspensions that use the factory Jeep mounts actually have 4 links.:)

But the number of links (e.g. "three-link") is determined by the number of attachment points at the frame end. The TNT longarm kit and a Ford radius arm are both 2-link designs.
