4 wheel drive problem

When i put my truck in 4 wheel drive this morning their was a small growling noise coming from my front end. I am worried its my transfer case but I have never heard a noise like this. My XJ is a 94 with a 3 inch lift and a NP242. Any help would be appricated and all I can think of is swaping in another transfer case.

Has it done this before? Did you go into full time or part time? Did it shift back to 2WD? Linkage misadjustment? Have you checked/changed the fluid recently? I've not ever had a problem w/my 242, but after having taken one apart, it is obvious there are many things that might go awry inside there.

No its never done it before and it did it when I went into full time so then once I heard the noise I put it back into 2wheel drive and it shifted fine.
