Pool noodles to fill up the big space, then fill in the smaller gaps with great stuff expanding (cancer) foam. I did this to mine 5 years ago and have not had an issue since.
Also I have no fear of drowning the front end with the noodles

Or don't worry about it and just wash that area out after a trail run and periodically lube your hinges. Mine have been gone fore 3-4 years and no ill effects. Much easier to keep clean and no chance of dirt getting stuck in there unseen. I'm in the PNW, you're in So California, it should be easier for you.
