Rear hatch shocks: Are they all the same for all XJs??

Nope. '97-up used a different design to the earlier ones, and I believe (though may be wrong on this) that there was another change somewhere in the 1991 timeframe.
 
you guys sure about that? i got a set off a 86ish xj on my 95 and they work fine

I thought the bottom brackets were different, I know that the ones I pulled from a 90 wouldn't work on my 94, but the 91's did and the bottom brackets were different on the 90.
