grinding noise in 4wd

Hello all! I'm new to this forum and I have a few questions. I have an '88 xj, 4.0, at, locked rear.When I drive it in 2wd I hear a clicking sound from the front passenger side. When I drive it in 4wd drive I hear ginding from the front pass side. What could this be? Axle? hub?

clinking sound in 2w and grinding in 4x............that would be a stretched transfer case chain......... TC needs a rebuild........
