Do u-bolts have a torque specification?

Yep - I've got torque specs for a few years in the tech section of my site (link in sig.)

A couple things to note...

1) Torque the nuts with the wheels ON THE GROUND supporting the full weight. ANY suspension fastener should be torqued to spec with the vehicle at rest on the ground (save ball joint nuts, which you can't get to fully assembled.) Spring fasteners, sway bar links, anything that goes through a bushing - set it in the ground before you torque it.

2) Work evenly with U-bolt nuts. You'd rather not pull them toward one leg or the other...

5-90

When I swapped axles this summer, I torqued the (new) u-bolts to 98 ft/lbs and re-torqued them 100 miles later. I'm not sure if that's the right way to do it, but it seems to have worked fine for me.
