sorry to sound like a new guy, but i'm wondering if i can swap t-cases. i have a 00' xj with a auto trans and a np231 and i want to trade it for a np231 with tera 4:1 out of a 87' yj with a puegeot ba10/5. is the spline count the same? can it be done without dropping the trans?

No, 87 YJ with Peugot will have 21 spline transfer. You MAY be able to switch input gears which would require a complete teardown of the 231.
