knocking noise

I have a 2000 xj.My xj has a knocking noise coming from this thing mounted on the firewall.I hope someone can tell me what this and if replacing or trying to repair will stop the noise.
 
It is on the left facing the windshield.It has two vacum hoses one with a tag that has a 1psi max pres.On top of this small black cylinder is a electric clip with 2 wires.
