GEAR RATIO INSANITY!!!

I have seen some of the other threads, and as usual its hard to get a solid answer about what gear ratio should u have with your tires.
I myself own a 1997 XJ 4.0 with the AW4 (auto), 5.5 R.E. lift, and 33x12.50 on 15x8's. With 3.55 gears.
When i talked to the gear shops they told me that 4.10 would be perfect and give me my gas milage back.
What do i do?
I live in Sacto cali, so there are lots of hills and freeways.
What would a good all around gear ratio be to put in my daily driver/weekend warrior horse?

While 4.10 will be a needed improvement over 3.55 .... the 4.56 gears will be closer to the ratio you jeep came from the factory at with 3.55 gears and say 27-28 inch tires

All i am trying to get is good gas milage. Gas prices are insane!

You pretty much screwed that up with the tires and lift.(like the rest of us) The gears will definitely make it better. I'm getting about 15 mpg with my 35's. Best tank was 16.8 mpg. You have to really maintain everything well.

What kind of mileage do you have now? Have you corrected your speedo?

go 4.56's... if it were me I would rather have 4.88s incase you plan on going 35s but Im guessing you dont have an axle that will go that high so 4.56's... I have 4.10s right now with my 31's and its about perfect for me so I wouldnt do 4.10s in your case...

edit: what rear axle do you have?

Rear through the sticky post on Axles and Gearing ......where, you ask? Look up the page to the top of this Mod Tech Section.......and read, read, read. Then go buy some 4:56 gears, perhaps 4:88's if you drive lots of hills.

DO NOT.......buy lower than 4:56 gears with 33's. For the folks that have and say stuff like....."4:10's are prefect", "I love my 33's and 3:73's".....they have buyers remorse and/or are lying to themselves and others that they SBOBI-ize with this dribble.

Good luck.:)

Here is the math that I am running on

My jeep had 27 inch tires and 3.55 gears when I bought it bone stock
I now have 3.55 and 31 inch tires but I also have inchitis and looking to go 33-34 soon

33/27 = 1.22 or very close to 4.56/3.55 = 1.284

and is a better match than 4.10/3.55 = 1.155

It is not quite perfect but I think 4.56 will get the tranny up into overdirve a bit more than you are getting right now.

If you want good gas milege do what I did... buy a ford escort for a DD.

I just upgraded to 4.56s. I am currently running 31s so I was concerned 4.56 might be too deep. I was wrong to worry. What a vast improvement over the 3.55s. I am not sure exactly what my mileage is because I haven't fixed the speedo yet but...Before I changed I was luckly to make back and forth to work for a week. It has been a week and 4days, plus running around last weekend, so I am getting much better mileage. Also, the XJ is running much better, smother driving around town, engine feels like it is running at correct RPMs, etc. I am very happy with the change.

With you already having 33s I would definitely go 4.56 and not 4.10.

What low-life gear shop in Sac told you 4.10 would be perfect with 4.10's?

Not JAWS or GearMan I hope.

EXTREME GEAR OFF ROAD TOLD ME AND 4 PLAY AUTOMOTIVE.
THEY MUST BE DIRKITONS HUH? (NEW WORD) HAHAHA
Thank u so much for the feed back guys and girls, I am def sticking with 4.56 and as for better gas milage, Ill drive my girlfriends cavilier for long trips.

Its all in what you want to do with your XJ. I use mine for everything including towing. I'm running a AW4, 4.10's and 30" tires and I'm getting 16 city 20 highway in the mountains of VA. Way better than I got with the 3.55's and same tires. If I were running anything bigger than 32's I would get the 4.56's.

I was getting 17-18mpg with this combo. JIM.

What's SBOBI? While I agree that 4.56 is a good recommendation, I object to you labelling anyone who's happy with 33s and 4.11 as delusional. In many cases 4.10/4.11 gearing is a good choice. Just too many other questions to consider. What type of driving - high speed, long distance, flat or hilly? What engine - 4cyl or 6cyl? Auto or manual? Which AW4 as it came with two different 4th gear ratios.

I think 33s and 4.11 works well for my Commanche. Of course I went with 4.11 because I could get a set of 4cyl XJ axles for $100 from the local pull-n-save. Do I wish I had 4.56? No. I think my crusing rpms and power are fine and I'm getting 16-18 mpg.
