Transmission Replacement

My buddy and I are looking at an '88 XJ for use as an off-road beater. It has the 4.0, it's 4x4, 4 door, and has a bad Puegot transmission. I was wondering what would be the cheapest possible option to replace the transmission. Do others such as the 5 speeds out of the newer ones bolt right in? We are just looking to get it up and moving, yet somewhat reliable without spending much money. Thanks in advance!

The AX-15 is for the most part a bolt in, but you need to check the spline count to make sure the transfer case will still mate up. I can't remember if they are compatible. I think it depends on the year model.

You'll need the transfer case or the input gear for the AX-15 - the Peugeot has a different spline count.

How do I know? I'm trying to find an AX-15 (good) or NV3550 (better!) to replace my Peugeot the next time it fails. I'm on my third now...
