Tire Carrier Question

XJ Samo

NAXJA Forum User
Does anyone know what the weight cappacity of the, stock, external tire carrier is?
88 XJ I have the stock carrier, with the stock five spoke wheel, with 235/75/15 Bridgestone Dueller HT's (I had to put longer wheel studs on to fit the larger tires.) I'm wondering if I can put a bike rack on it (the one that mounts thru the wheel) with three bike on it.
Thanks Sam

Oh yeah the owners manuel did not say,
and the dealer said "I dunno".

Not sure which stock carrier you are referring to, I know of at least two different version.

One mounted with two body mounts to the passenger side quarter panel.

The one I had mounted to the passenger side rear bumper. I ran a 31 x 10.5 Baja Belted Claw on it for about a year and it was starting to show signs of stress. As I recall the rim and tire were roughly 60 pounds.

Don't know if that helps, but (generally) I wouldn't recommend anything over 60 - 70 pounds on either carrier.

Kent :)
