remove front driveshaft=better mpg?

i had a friend years ago that had a 80's xj,,,,he removed the front diveshaft to get better gas mileage (only used 4 wheel drive in snow)........................................................any truth to this?

On a disconect I could say yes but not worth the hassle. On a non disconect nothing. Every thing would still turn except the front output shaft in the t/c
