clicking noise in driveline? help!

hey one of my buddies with a 1999 xj with the common 4x4 5spd I6 combo, has a clicking noise coming from some where in his drive line, sounds like its coming from the middle of the truck, T-case to rear diff somewhere.... its not a constant noise though... its almost a mild random ticking noise.... any ideas? i was thinking a u-joint or something? thanx

probably a Ujoint. depending on the number of miles on it, could just be a worn out Ujoint. could be something more expensive though. lets hope its something as cheap as a Ujoint.

Check the slip joint in the front drive shaft. Push up and down on the drive shaft to see if there is any play.

The joint in the middle of the driveshaft.

ive got a 91 laredo with the same darn problem it sounds like somethings loose i cant figure it out im gunna have a mechanic check it out and see if he can put his 2 cents in on the shit good luck if he lets me know ill replace whatever it and and tell tyou if it worked

Look at your CV joint. I bet at least one of the U-joints is bad and possibly the centering pin too.
