wtf is this thing?

ok just got a new shaft in for the d30, replacing the trashed old ones with a newer style shaft with the 297x joint. I open up the box and find a d30 shaft with a funny lookin splined collar around the inner stub shaft. what the hell is this thing and why have i never seen it before. this might be a stupid question but i have been searching the internet and have still been left scratching my head.

It's the tone ring for ABS. It won't hurt anything.

ok...thanks a lot...i thought it had to do with abs but i wasn't sure
