What is this?

Without more details (year) can't say for sure. But if it is a little black done shaped sensor it is the camera the goverment uses to spy on you.

Keyless entry sensor.

i saw one of those at the junkyard but was wondering why my 2001 xj doesn't have this when i have keyless entry. anyone else not?

Later Cherokee's use RF (radio frequency) transmitters/receivers for their keyless entry, the older units utilize IR (infra-red). That little black dome thingy is the infra-red receiver.

It's for the really crappy IR keyless entry (my '92 has it). I'm pretty sure the newer stuff has RF keyless entry. My '92 the fob has to be in a window to work (really close). My wifes Bonneville is RF and you can unlock the doors from the house.
