rear tire carrier

How beefy/strong have you guys made the stand for the rear tire carrier? would 1" square tubing 1/8" wall be too much? too little? It needs to support up to 35x12.5 and up to two 5 gallon tanks plus some additional goodies (hilift and shovel)

I would go with 2" square 3/16" for something like a 35

I made one once. It worked perfectly, albeit it was on a K5 Blazer. I used 2" square (3/16 wall) like said before. Mine attached to the tow hitch and could be folded down out of the way when I needed to open the tailgate. I had two Gerry Cans and a 35" Mudder on it. Check my website for pics if you want.
