Need Help---Headlight switch

I went to pull the switch for the headlights tonight and the whole stalk came right out in my hand, with no lights on either. I need to get home from work and this is not good. Any quick fix to do for now before I order a new switch assembly?

There is a little button on the switch assy that you press in order to insert the stalk. When you release the button the stalk is held in place.

You may have to reach underneath and up and around the lower dash in order to reach the switch assy. You'll be able to see what I'm explaining. I can't remember if the button is on the top or bottom.

I'll go with the bottom also - from what I remember.

I did just mine in a 90 XJ. It's on the bottom. You should be able to reach up and push it up.

With the shaft coming out without pushing the button I suspect it's broken.

BTW the wiring plug is a major pain in the ass to get off and on.
