what trans in 84

hello i have an 84 xj w/ a 2.8 (converted to a 3.4) and the origional 5-speed manual, the trans just went out on me and i was wondering what trans is in there from what i have read there was a couple of options in that year either a ba10/5 or an ax-5 if someone knows an easy way to tell it would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to switch to an auto, so i would also like to know if the transfer case is the same with both the auto and the manual thank you for any info

One easy way to tell the difference: the Peugot case is split in the middle in left and right castings. The Aisin-Warner is segmented front to rear and has cooling ribs.

The BA 10/5 was introduced in 1987 and used behind the 4.0L engine.

An 84 should have an Aisin-Seiki AX-5, but due to production sortages some early XJs came through with a Borg-Warner T-5.
