Ford 9" buildup

Hey, I have a 9" under an old galaxie 500 with a 390. I want to put this under the rear of my xj. What kind of work is involved in shaving an axle? (can I do it myself?) I believe it has the same lug pattern as my xj and I can get 4.88's for it. I am going to run 35x12.50 BFG's. What should I do to get it trail ready but still keep its onroad manners? (my budget is limited) Thanks in advance

shaving? do you mean shortening, or shaving for clearance? if you mean shortening, you really need a jig to make sure the ends go on straight.
