RE 3.5" Lift & Tire Size Question

I have a 3.5-inch RE6010 XJ Super-Flex and Goodyear 31x10.50R15 MT/Rs. I am planning on getting Bushwhackers or TJsand doing some cutting.

I'm wondering what tire size I can run with my lift and BW or TJ flares. Only rub I get currently is when I turn tight. I can almost get lock to lock, but not quite. I'm looking at getting 32x11.50R15s or 33x12.50R15s. Mostly looking for a width increase. Would really like the 33s if they will work, but wouldn't mind the 32s either.

I'm planning on getting either a different backspacing (Les Schwab Ultra 50s if they are avail. with different backspacing) or the bolt on spacers listed on RockyRoad Outfitters. http://www.rocky-road.com/xjspace.html (I know lots of people talk down on spacers, but these look pretty tough.) to account for the increased width. (Also checking into longer shackles http://www.rocky-road.com/xjshackle.html or Revolvers if they are longer than stock.)

Why didn't I go with a bigger lift? $$$ The cost of the lift and additional parts such as a SYE made it too expensive, though I may splurge in a couple years when I get some bills paid down.

Thanks for any responses.

This exact same question came up a couple days ago on another forum, so I will just copy and paste the same thing I posted there:

This is an old buddies XJ with the RE 3.5" Superflex kit with 33's at the time of this picture. He is sitting on 35" MT/R's now.

This isn't a great view, but here it is on 35's:

And another flexing the 35's:

Trimming and bumpstops were setup very much like my tech articles on my website:
http://www.rocklizardfabrications.com/fender_trimming.htm
http://www.rocklizardfabrications.com/Adjusting_Bumpstops.htm

Trimming in the rear is NOT past the pinch welds, nor folded over like many people think they need to do. The front trimming is a little more involved due to the wheels being able to turn. If you have your wheel well liner removed, you will see a pinch weld seam at the rear of the wheel well. That can easily be beat over with a small sledge hammer, no cutting or slicing necessary. The RE 3.5" kit my buddy has is the full pack kit with about 5" in the rear, and a 3/4" poly spacer added to the front 3.5" coils to even with the rear. If I remember correctly, he has 5, if not 6" of bumpstop in the front. Hope that helps.

Man, thats ALOT of bumpstop!

It still flexes right up to the fender trimming and doesn't overcompress and wear out the springs as fast. I have 5" bumpstop front and rear of my junk with 5" lift and 34" Trxus (same height as 35" MTRs). If it is going to hit something, I would rather it be my bumpstops and not my fenders. Bumpstops stop better than fenders. People just can't seem to understand the importance of bumpstops. Here is an article I did for those that don't quite get it: http://www.rocklizardfabrications.com/Adjusting_Bumpstops.htm

Thanks for the response. I am on dialup which sux... I did do a search, but must have missed the one you responded to. When I was on Broadband, I'd spend alot of time searching, but dang dialup is so slow I do about 1/10th the views (or less) in the same time due to my speed.

So from your input it looks like I could go with 33s, but might need more bumpstop. All I have right now is what came with the RE 3.5" Super-Flex (Full Leaf Version).

Along with that I could still use input from you or someone else on what I can do max with just the RE lift, though I'll look into the bumpstops as well.

Thanks again, and keep the input coming guys. :)

Edit: What did your friend have to do to go up to 35s with that lift? Also what is his backspacing?

He didn't have to do anything besides a little more bumpstop. His backspacing is 3.25" on 15x8" rims.

Sweet thanks again GBJ!

Who makes that bumper on the front? I like it a lot. Also how much trimming was needed to fit the 33's? What kind of trim is best to cover the edge of the sheet metal? Thanks.

Here is my fender trimming article, as well as my adjusting your bumpstops article, which is also what you need ot properly tune your suspension and keep trimming in moderation for running 33's.

I also make that front bumper

and sell that fender trim used on the fender edges after trimming
