87 XJ axle on 96 XJ?

Will an axel housing from a 87 XJ and all it components work with everything on a 96 XJ?, and if it will fit, are any mods needed to be done? Both are Left Hand drive. Can't find one from a closer year to replace mine, and I need to get the 96 up and running.

What axle? Front or rear?

If front, it's a high-pinion D30 but has a vacuum disconnect if the t-case is a NP231. The '96 will have a high-pinion D30 without vacuum disco, but the olde one will bolt up.

If it's rear, it's either a D35 or the highly desireable D44 (see pics at http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/gear1.html ). Either will bolt in with little modification needed. See http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/dana44.html for more on that procedure in my '96.

Just a note if its the d35 it does not have c clips like the 96. and the only problem my be if you have anti lock brakes.

Front or rear, make sure you have, or are prepared to buy, the whole brake assembly, because these are different. The 87 had 10 inch brakes with a narrow drum on the rear, and a completely different caliper setup on the front, including a different knuckle.

Peaple like the d44 because it is a bolt in up grade. with nothing to change. I like the 8.8 ALOT better than an d44. I had mine bought and built for less than what some want for a 44 stock.
