I think they are 8 mm but not totally sure. Just go to your local home center and pick up two of each size metric nut up to 10 mm, go out to your XJ and try them. Don't forget about washers.
The second thing you can do is go to the dealer and pick up two nuts. I got new ones recently. I think with tax I paid $3 for the pair of nuts. They are nice they have attached washers so you won't lose them.
Some previous owner had put on an aftermaker holder and I broke it installing my new battery. I went to the dealer to pick up a new hold down and picked up a couple of nuts while I was there. I am impressed with the factory hold down, build to stout, it made out 3/8 or 1/2 bar stock.
