evaporator replacement--if you have done it...

2001 XJ Sport 2door 4x4 Up Country

FSM (and my mechanic) states that removal of the steering column is required. Is it truly necessary?

Also, should I expect to find a springlock removal tool at Autozone/Advance, etc?

Yes and yes.
BTW it's very unusual for a evaporator to go bad, are you sure?

We're pretty certain that it's the evaporator. We filled the empty system with refrigerant and dye six months ago. Now it's the system is empty again, and the dye is in the compartment beneath the evaporator.

I read several accounts in this forum detailing the problems with evaporators in late-model Jeeps.

Not on the later XJ's after the body refresh. It's unfortunately relatively common........bummer.

yea, that evap should be a factory recall, happend on ZJ's too.... in over 40 years of driving and about 50 cars, most all of them new, I have never had an evap go bad till I got a jeep...

when you remove the strg column, dont let strg wheel rotate, this causes the clockspring to un-center.
