You might be able to get away with 30's. On my 88 XJ 30x9.5 Dunlop RVs worked great. You will get a little rubbing on the lower control arms but you should be okay on the fenders. Rubbing on the LCAs isn't a big deal and if it annoys you just back out the steering stops a bit with a washer (will shrink your turning radius a bit tough).
I've heard some guys have minor rubbing on the rear fenders with 30s of newer XJ when there's a lot of weight in the back.
